Most hunters who want to hunt Black Bear book a trip to Maine or Canada where the bear are baited, over-hunted, and never allowed to grow.  You are taken out in large groups hoping you at least see even a little bear.  We offer a superior alternative.  The Black Bear of The Dismal Swamp are larger and more abundant because they have a consistent flourishing source of food for which they do not have to travel far to obtain, and they are not hunted.

The Black Bear of The Great Dismal Swamp are illegal to hunt within the refuge, so they are able to flourish in population and in size.   Our private land was wrought from The Great Dismal Swamp and is surrounded by it on 3 sides.  1300 of our acres produce corn and soybean which draw the bear out to feed from  June through January.  We offer them one of the few consistent food sources available so they come in large numbers every year.  We monitor their activity so when hunting season comes we can put you right on a bear.

The opportunity to hunt bear in The Dismal Swamp is something magnificent.  It is also a privilege we do not take lightly.  We do not just allow anyone to come hunt here.  We expect people to be responsible hunters looking to take a trophy bear and have fun doing so..   We only allow a limited number of hunts each year,  usually 4-5, even though our bear population could support many more.  This allows the few hunts we offer to be successful almost every time, while still ensuring there is always an excess of mature trophy bears.   We offer 3 and 5 day hunts.

In 2007 we offered 6 hunts and harvested bears weighing 575, 560, 450, 425, 260 and had one go unrecovered .    You can expect that when you come here you will always have a personal guide.  And we will work for you to make your hunt a success.  When you come, we have a cabin with bunk beds , a bathroom, refrigerator, and directv, and internet access. There is a microwave, a grille and you are responsible for your food, there is a walmart nearby.  You will hunt in a stand 15 feet off of the ground.  You are welcome to hunt with rifle or bow.  Bow  and rifle hunting begin in October.  There will not be 10 other hunters distracting our attention from you because we only book one to two hunts at one time.  So your hunt will be our priority.

To book a hunt with us or for more information please call (757) 816-7044 or use the contact us button below to email us and someone will reply within 24 hours.
